Why You’re Not as Far Away as It Feels

The distance between where you are and where you want to be is smaller than you think.

The Feeling That Keeps People Stuck

A lot of people feel like:

“I’m still a long way off.”

  • not experienced enough
  • not prepared enough
  • not ready yet

So they delay.

They assume there’s a big gap between:

  • where they are
    and
  • where they need to be

But That Gap Is Often Misjudged

Because you’re looking at:

  • the end state

and comparing it to:

  • your current position

Without recognising everything in between.

What You’ve Likely Already Built

If you’ve been working for a number of years, you already have:

  • experience solving real problems
  • exposure to how organisations operate
  • understanding of what good looks like
  • and evidence of delivery

That’s not nothing.

That’s your foundation.

Why This Matters

Because when you underestimate where you are:

  • you delay action
  • you overprepare
  • and you stay in place longer than needed

Not because you’re not capable…

but because you don’t recognise it.

What Strong Operators Do Differently

They don’t assume they’re far away.

They assess:

  • what they already have
  • what’s missing
  • and what needs to be built next

And they move from there.

The Shift You Need to Make

Instead of thinking:

“I’m not there yet”

Start thinking:

“I’m closer than I think… what’s the next step?”

Because This Is the Reality

You don’t need to go from:

  • zero → expert

You need to go from:

  • current → next

What This Looks Like in Practice

Progress becomes:

  • building a bit more runway
  • having a few conversations
  • testing your positioning
  • understanding how opportunities arise

Not a complete transformation overnight.

A Simple Reframe

You’re not starting from scratch.

You’re building from experience.

The Cost of Waiting
Waiting feels safe. It isn’t. The Pattern That Feels Responsible A lot of people think: “I’ll move when the time is right.” So they: wait for more clarity wait for more confidence wait for the “right moment” It feels measured. It feels sensible. But Here’s What Waiting Actually Does While you’re waiting: nothing is being tested no experience is being built no movement is happening So the ga...
